Little Quakers Academy (LQA) is a community preschool designed to provide a morning and afternoon or full-day preschool experience for children ages three to pre-kindergarten. Before- and after-care services are provided to all full-day preschool students at no additional cost. In addition, LQA provides special education service options for preschool-aged children who have been evaluated and determined to meet eligibility requirements.
Brentwood Elementary is home to just over 400 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Built in 1963, the school has gone through several updates and renovations, and is a warm, inviting space for students and staff alike. Located on Oliver Avenue, Brentwood has a long and proud tradition of excellence.
Central Elementary opened its doors in 1888, and many alumni recall attending high school or junior high in this Main Street building. But for many years now, it's been known as Central Elementary, and currently is home to nearly 550 K-5 students. After a major renovation just a few years ago, the building is in excellent condition and will serve the community for many years to come.
In 1991, Plainfield added its first "new" school in many years when the Plainfield Community Middle School opened its doors on Elm Drive. As the community continued to grow, the school transitioned to an intermediate school in 2008, and then in 2012, it became an elementary school. It's now home to K-5 students, our youngest Quakers who attend Little Quakers Academy preschool, and The Imagination Lab. When Guilford Elementary opens in August 2021, many current Clarks Creek students will move to the new school, opening up plenty of breathing room for the remaining Quakers.
Continuing to prove that schools don't have to be new to be excellent learning centers, Van Buren Elementary continues the tradition of providing a nurturing environment where students learn, grow and find the joy in learning. Since it opened its doors on Shaw Street in 1956, Van Buren has left its students with a lifelong loyalty to the teachers and staff who nurture their education. In 2019, Van Buren Elementary was named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
With careful planning and stewardship, Plainfield has proven that existing buildings can be cared for and maintained, and they can provide safe and nurturing places where students learn and thrive. And yet, sometimes the community grows in ways that, quite simply, demand additional classrooms. And so, in August of 2021, Guilford Elementary proudly opened its doors. And this state-of-the-art, spacious school was built without any education tax burden on the taxpayers of Guilford Township.
Since August 2008, the sprawling school at the base of the hill on Stafford Road has been home to the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students of Plainfield Community Middle School. This school first opened its doors in 1958 and was home to the high school and junior high school until May 2008. While it's been through several renovations in the last 60+ years, the current renovation opens up hallways, pulls in more natural light and provides far greater security for students and staff.
For many long-time Plainfield residents, today's Plainfield High School is still referred to as the "new" high school, even though it opened in August 2008. The school was built with the present and future in mind, and additions will be simple if (or when) they are needed. Located just north of I-70 between Reeves and Hadley roads, PHS is a credit to the students, staff and community, and is also a school that was built without significant tax impact on residents.
When the Legacy Foundation was established in 2007, it was at the invitation of then-Superintendent Jerry Holifield. Plainfield Community School Corporation was on the verge of building the community's first "new" high school since 1956, and Dr. Holifield recognized the need for a group to come together to be a current and future support for all Plainfield schools.
Over time, the Foundation board realized that it was important to invite members of the community who are not PHS alumni to become part of the group. We were missing the talents and connections of too many outstanding friends and neighbors. Today's Foundation is served by a majority of PHS graduates, but it is no longer an exclusive group.
